CE hours annually
The recurring requirement is 14 hours annually for licensees to whom the requirement applies.
Montana Laboratory Continuing Education
Montana clinical laboratory science practitioners who are subject to the recurring CE requirement generally complete 14 hours of continuing education annually. The requirement does not apply until the licensee's first full year of licensure. Check applicability before deciding what CE you need.

Montana CE Requirements at a Glance
The recurring requirement is 14 hours annually for licensees to whom the requirement applies.
The current rule states that CE requirements do not apply until the licensee's first full year of licensure.
The reviewed current Rule 24.129.2101 contains no provision allowing excess hours to carry into the next year. Plan on the current 14-hour annual rule unless Montana issues newer controlling guidance.
The Board lists the regular renewal period as March 1 through May 1, followed by the ordinary 45-day late-renewal period through June 15.
The current rule says Board staff do not preapprove CE programs or sponsors; the licensee is responsible for selecting quality programs that satisfy the content criteria.
Who the Montana Requirement Applies To
Montana recognizes Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Clinical Laboratory Specialist and Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) license categories. The ordinary annual CE summary on this page is for active-license renewal.
Licensees subject to the recurring CE requirement obtain 14 hours annually after the first-full-year timing rule applies.
Inactive and reactivation situations are different. The current Board materials describe separate reactivation requirements, including proof of required CE for the two-year period immediately preceding a reactivation application. Verify your current status before relying on the ordinary active-renewal summary.
Newly Licensed in Montana?
Under the reviewed current Montana rule, the continuing-education requirement does not apply until the licensee's first full year of licensure. Do not assume that a newly issued license automatically creates an immediate 14-hour obligation.
Prior-Year Hours
Not under the reviewed current rule text. Current Rule 24.129.2101 states that licensees obtain 14 hours of CE annually and does not contain an excess-hour carryover provision. Older Montana materials historically referenced carryover, so do not rely on an older summary when planning a current renewal.
Do not subtract old excess hours from the current annual requirement unless the Montana Board provides newer controlling guidance for your situation.
Complete the Montana CE You Still Need
Before selecting a course, check that its content and documentation meet Montana's requirements. Completing a course does not guarantee renewal; keep your completion records and follow the Board's renewal instructions.

What Counts as Montana Laboratory CE?
Under the current rule, qualifying CE should contribute to the licensee's knowledge and professional competence, contain significant intellectual or practical content, and be germane to clinical laboratory science.
Online delivery alone does not make an activity qualifying or disqualifying. The content and documentation still need to satisfy Montana's criteria.
Current Rule 24.129.2101 allows qualifying college coursework and assigns 15 CE hours per semester credit or 10 CE hours per quarter credit when the rule's criteria are met.
Teaching / Presenter Credit
Yes, under the current rule. For a one-hour presentation that is germane to the profession, the presenter is awarded two hours of CE, subject to the rule's limitations.
Montana Annual Renewal Timeline
Regular renewal period opens.
Annual license expiration and regular renewal deadline.
End of the ordinary 45-day late-renewal period identified by the Board.
June 15 is not presented here as permanent termination of every later renewal or reinstatement route. The current Board FAQ states that a lapsed license may have later renewal options for up to two years, after which reapplication may be required.
Keep Your CE Documentation
The current rule authorizes random audit of up to 50% of renewed licensees' CE hours. Keep documentation organized and available if requested.
State License + National Credential
Montana state-license requirements and national certification requirements are separate. An activity may help with more than one obligation only when it independently satisfies each organization's rules.
If you also maintain an ASCP BOC credential, review the ASCP BOC Credential Maintenance Program requirements separately. For broader state-and-credential navigation, return to the laboratory CE requirements hub.
