Florida Specialty CE

Florida Clinical Laboratory Specialty CE Requirements

Florida requires one contact hour of CE in each applicable specialty category in which you are licensed. Those hours fit within the applicable CE framework rather than automatically being added on top of the standard 24-hour established-licensee minimum.

Licensed specialty/designation ≠ CE Broker subject area.

Florida applications identify specialties/designations by license level. CE Broker classifies reported CE using subject areas that overlap, but they are not one-to-one.

Step 1 — Florida License Record

Licensed specialties/designations by level

Use your current Florida license record as the controlling input. Do not infer specialty from a national job title such as MLS, MLT, or MT.

✓ means listed/selectable on the reviewed current application. A dash means not separately listed/selectable; it does not prove the testing area can never fall within a broader designation.

Supervisor is shown here only as a license level for specialty mapping.

Qualifying for or upgrading to Supervisor is a separate process with route-specific requirements. See Florida Supervisor qualification and upgrade routes →

Generalist Is Not One Specialty Bucket

Expand the level-specific Generalist definition

Technologist Generalist

Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Immunohematology, Microbiology, and Serology/Immunology.

5 specialty-category hours within the 20 General hours under the standard framework, leaving 15 other General hours.

Supervisor Generalist

Blood Banking/Donor Processing, Clinical Chemistry, Cytogenetics, Hematology, Immunohematology, Microbiology, and Serology/Immunology.

7 specialty-category hours within the 20 General hours under the standard framework, leaving 13 other General hours.

Worked Examples

How specialty allocation works inside the framework

Single-specialty Technician

One applicable specialty means 1 of the 20 General hours is allocated to that specialty, leaving 19 other General hours. It is not automatically a 25th hour.

Technologist with 3 specialties

Clinical Chemistry + Hematology + Microbiology means 3 of the 20 General hours are specialty-allocated, leaving 17 other General hours.

New specialty this biennium

When the current-biennium added-specialty exception applies, exclude only the newly added category from that biennium's one-hour requirement; existing specialty obligations remain.
